Successful Transactions
PLANET (Ingenico)
Until 2006, I was the founding partner of Teknoloji Holding and I was in charge of business and market development for 18 years. One of the most noteworthy projects I have initiated in Teknoloji Holding is bringing world’s second biggest EFT/POS (credit card terminal) manufacturer, Ingenico, to Turkey. Being the executive board member and responsible for business development at Mobicom, mobile data operator, where we partnered with Çukurova Holding, KVK and Genpa; I carried out several negotiations with Ingenico for the distribution of their mobile POS terminals for Turkey. The company, which tried and failed two times to penetrate the Turkish market, was reluctant for such an enterprise. For a period of 6 months, I persistently visited Mr. Gerard Compain, CEO of the company at that time, by traveling to Paris to convince him that mobile EFT/POS would be the best possible instrument to launch the enterprise. Once he felt assured, he designated a dedicated team for Turkey. We promoted the mobile EFT/POS terminals to Yapi Kredi Bank and they regarded the offer as a perfect solution for cabs (Remember back in 1998, no GPRS, we weren’t text messaging our friends for celebrating their New Year) and placed an order for 2,500 units. The only problem was the missing electronics inside the device. In other words, actually, there wasn’t such a product. Nevertheless, once we achieved to get the order we delivered all of the items on time. Collaboration with Yapi Kredi Bank was the first successful market entry of Ingenico in Turkey. Pleased with the Ingenico product, Yapi Kredi ordered the design of a new stationary EFT/POS terminal from Ingenico. Sales figures were rising so significantly that other banks switched to Ingenico as well. With the correct decisions of the shareholders and operating with the supervision of a very successful General Manager, the company increased its market share in Turkey to 30% from the “ground” within 8 years. In June 2006, the partnership of Teknoloji Holding was dissolved and the annual target sales figure of EUR 23 Million was achieved by the end of the year; furthermore in 2007, the turnover hit EUR 25 Million. Ingenico, the company which I conduced in their third attempt in entering Turkish market with the sales of 2,500 mobile EFT/POS terminals to Yapi Kredi Bank in 1999, today has 750,000 EFT/POS terminals in operation at 12 banks in Turkey. Ingenico attempted to acquire Planet in 2005, but shifted its focus to other markets at that time. Finally in 2007, Planet, the sole distributor of Ingenico in Turkey, was acquired by Ingenico for EUR 26 Million.
